What is the Oliver McGowan mandatory training?

The Oliver McGowan mandatory training is the government-recommended programme designed to give health and social care staff the essential knowledge, skills, and confidence to support autistic people and people with a learning disability. It is a legal requirement under the Health and Care Act 2022 for all regulated services.

What is the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2?

Tier 1 is an awareness-level course suitable for general staff who require an understanding of neurodiversity and learning disabilities. Tier 2 is a specialist-level course for staff who provide direct, hands-on care or support. Tier 2 includes practical skills, scenario-based learning, and lived-experience-led content.

Do learners need to complete Tier 1 before Tier 2?

Yes. Tier 1 is a prerequisite for Tier 2.
If your staff have not completed Tier 1, we can provide the link to the free online training.

Who needs to complete Tier 2 training?

Tier 2 is required for staff who regularly support autistic people or people with a learning disability, including support workers, healthcare assistants (HCAs), nurses, residential and supported living staff, and domiciliary care teams.
